HER BEST MATCH
A REVIEW

I like to keep an open mind and read different types of books but I have my favorites. They are not romantic comedies but I don’t rate my reviews according to personal preferences. I evaluate the book’s quality in spite of my personal preferences. I think that is the least I can do.

Having said that, I must confess I enjoyed ‘Her Best Match’ much more than I thought I would. Tami’s a talented writer who takes you to a pleasant ride in her fairy-tale kind of story. If you enjoyed Cinderella as a child, and keep searching for Prince Charming in your ‘book boyfriends’, you’ll love this book.

Finally, I’d like to explain my 4-star rating. Although I enjoyed the book very much, and I understand it’s supposed to be an unrealistic story, I found some elements of it a bit exaggerated.

ALPHA READERS

THANK YOU,

In March 2014, when I started writing ‘Luck of the Irish’, I meant it to be a short-story, which I wanted to publish on St. Patrick’s Day. As so often happens with characters and authors, Declan and Keira took control of the story and I couldn’t stop them. Or wouldn’t, I don’t know. The fact is that I fell in love with their story as they unfold it to me. I wanted to know them better and write about them 24/7. Unfortunately, not being able to afford that - got bills to pay and a day job which pays them – I had to squeeze as much time as possible into my other tasks to be able to write Declan and Keira’s story. And it’s been a fun ride! I’ve had my share of bumps, stumbles and falls, I’ve met great people along the way – namely, ALL of my alpha readers - and I had the time of my life delving into these characters’ minds.
Now, six months after that modest beginning, I have to finish writing ‘Luck of the Irish’. Even though I know I’ll miss having those characters around me, telling me their thoughts and feelings (mostly, I’ll miss Declan, of course – my Alpha readers know what I mean LOL), it’s time to say goodbye and move on to new characters and new stories.
But, I can’t do that before thanking in public this AMAZING group of people who helped me get here. They’ve tirelessly encouraged me, corrected me, nudged me and pointed me in the right direction. I could not have written ‘Luck of the Irish’ without them.
So, to my dearest ALPHA READERS – Allison, Alyssa, Erin, Genna, Kimber, Leigh-Ann, Loralea, Maike, Maureen, Niki, Sam, and Tonya – I say THANK YOU for your hard work, for taking time out of your busy lives to read, comment and send me feedback. Through your eyes, I was able to see interesting and different aspects of Keira, Declan, and all the other characters, which enriched the story and took it to whole new levels. I’m very proud of what we have accomplished as a team. I’ll soon send you the last chapter, but I still haven’t found the answer to that question I put to you on my last email – ‘Would you say it’s normal for an author to get sad when she/he is almost done writing a novel?’ LOL

RRBC'S BOOK OF THE MONTH

Here's my review

My rate of 4 stars is due to the fact that I found the writing style and the book structure a bit odd. I got distracted by issues like punctuation and chapter division. The author uses too many ellipses, for my taste, and the chapters are extremely short. For instance, my Kindle app is set for the maximum number of words in a two-column page. In it, chapter 8 has 12 lines while the longest one - Chapter 19 - has 7 pages. Most chapters have 3 pages. Another example of it is Chapter 90. It ends in the middle of a dialogue, which continues in the beginning of Chapter 91 for two short paragraphs. Then, there are three stars signaling a scene change. Why? The next book in this series –Superior Intrigue – could benefit from a more thorough editing.
Having said that, I must confess these issues might have annoyed the writer in me. I’m sure most readers will not notice and will not be distracted by them. And these readers shouldn’t let these little things bother them because the story is worth their time.
The rhythm flows as fast as the car chase scenes. Being a fan of car races myself, I was enthralled by the detailed descriptions of the action. They put me right in the middle of the chase. The mysteries and the investigation process kept me glued to my laptop screen.
The author was very skillful when presenting characters from the two previous books of this series. I hadn’t read those books but that made no difference in my understanding and enjoyment of Superior Peril.
Although we get answers to many questions raised along the book, there is a cliffhanger. That didn’t bother me because I love a good series and this is definitely an excellent detective series. I recommend it to all book lovers in search for a good story.

NEW TITLE LIVE

 FALLEN ANGEL

*** This is NOT a complete book. It’s a teaser from an upcoming novel. ***
Angela Hewson is a gorgeous, wealthy young woman of Irish-Italian descent. Her mother comes from an old, traditional Italian family. Her father is an idealist who wants to save the world. She rebelled against her politically correct parents because they didn’t understand her hunger for adventure and pleasure. She searched everywhere until she found her match in Greg.
Greg is older than time itself because he’s immortal. He has seen things people wouldn’t believe. He has done things people wouldn’t want to know. He’s sinfully attractive. He’s a tall, mysterious fallen angel. As such, he looks for the very best in life. He knows how to have a good time. He excels in the pleasures of the flesh. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants. And he wants Angela.
This is a teaser (contains 7,500 words = 22 pages) from Liz Gavin’s next novel - a tale of darkness, desire and deceit. Can a human resist a devious angel? Would a pleasure-seeking woman say 'no' to temptation?

Alpha Readers Wanted

I'm looking for Alpha Readers for Luck of the Irish. Don't know what an alpha reader does? No problem. I'll give you the big picture. An alpha reader's job is to help the author during the writing process, describing their reactions to the text. No specifics, just their own thoughts and feelings as they read a chapter.
Sounds interesting? There's more.
The most puncual and helpful alpha readers will get a paperback copy of Luck of the Irish. How does that sound? Still interested?
GREAT! Drop me a line at
lizgavin@elessarbooks.com - subject line 'Alpha Reader' - saying you're up to that and I'll send you the detailed guidelines.
Bear in mind, though, alpha readers get a draft version of the text, in PDF, as I progress. It will contain typos, grammar mistakes, etc. I don't need you to concentrate on that. I need your feelings and reactions to the story and the characters. :-) Proofreading is for the beta readers.
(wink, wink)

REVIEW OF THE REUNION by A.A. PENCIL - RAVE REVIEW BOOK CLUB

"The Reunion: Book 1 of the Beneath the Trap Door Series"

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have to say I’m not a big fan of mystery books but I was intrigued by the raving reviews this one got and by the book’s blurb.

The start of the story seemed a little slow for me and I agree with other reviewers who said there were too many characters. I did get a little lost and was tempted to skip some descriptions but I didn’t do it because I guessed they would be important later on in the story. Otherwise, why would they be there, right?

I also agree with fellow readers who said the book needs editing. As a writer myself, I know how hard it is to read the same text over and over without becoming blind to its possible flaws. I’ve done so many times. That’s why I encourage readers to ignore whatever typos they find and keep reading it because the plot and the story are worth their time and effort.

Like I said before, not being a huge fan of mysteries gave me the necessary distance to approach the story from a different perspective. I got scared and got surprised countless times. If I were a fan of the genre I might saw some of the twists in the plot coming but, as it was, I was completely clueless (pun intended). That’s why I advise other readers to navigate carefully through the published reviews as some did spoil the end.

Some scenes were a bit too gory. But, again, this is my fault, not the book’s since I don’t particularly appreciate this kind of scene. Actually, I would say the fact that I kept reading The Reunion until its very end, in spite of my own hesitations towards the genre and parts of the narrative, is proof enough that the story is powerful. It drew me in regardless of my qualms and kept me going.

As for the astounding end, don’t let anyone spoil it for you. You won’t see it coming and it will blow up your mind.

Fans of Agatha Christie everywhere – keep tabs on Ms. Atoyia A. Pencil because this new author is going places!

UPSIDE DOWN is almost ready!

Would you like to get a peek? Here's a brand-new scene for you to get a taste of what's to come:

Mark squeezed my hand lightly and gave me one of his trademark smiles. But the sincere kind. I had seen Mark dazzle people with the widest, fakest grins and they would never have guessed how angry or annoyed he really was. The oven timer went off, I put the steaming pot on the table in the dining room and we finally attacked it.
“Hmm, Carol this is divine. I had forgotten how well you can cook.”
“Oh, I’m more than a pretty face, you know.”
“I do know that,” he replied as his hand traveled slowly up my arm. “You are a gorgeous face, a hot body, a sharp mind and shrewd business instincts - all wrapped up in one glorious woman.”
When he finished his sentence, his hand had closed behind my nape so he pulled me towards him for a kiss. It started as a gentle exchange but I knew it could easily get as hot as an open fire. That was always the case with us. So I pulled back, smiled at him, returned my attention to my plate and made a joke to cool down the temperature in the room which had escalated to boiling hot.
“Flattery won’t get you anywhere, young man.”
He chuckled at my feigned outraged tone, winked and sat back straight on his chair.
“You can’t blame me for trying, though. Maybe you give me a promotion or a position as your personal assistant or something. No, wait. I already have that! Silly me! I take all that back.”
“Too late. I’m already walking on air with all your compliments.”
We laughed and the friendly exchanges continued throughout our meal. I enjoyed Mark’s company more than I was ready to admit to myself. I was having a great time until the phone rang and an ominous feeling made me answer it without checking the caller ID thinking it might be my mother with more bad news.
“Hello?”
“Hello, there, beautiful,” a very familiar voice greeted me causing a huge smile to light up my face and a sigh of relief to escape me before I answered his heartfelt greeting.
“Oh, gosh, sweetie, I missed you so much. I have so many things to tell you! When did you get back, Dave?”
I hadn’t seen Dave since he had gone to India, two years before. And I got so excited to hear from him that I forgot all about Mark and our dinner.
“I haven’t gone back, silly, I’m still in London.”
“But it’s three o’clock in the morning there. How come you’re calling me?”
“Do I need a reason to call you, now?”
“No, you don’t, honey. Besides your reasons aren’t usually very good.”
“If you must know, smarty-pants, I couldn’t sleep and I missed you.”
“Oh, Dave, I’m so happy to hear your voice right now, anyway,” my voice broke off as I remembered my father’s health problems and everything else I was facing. “I wish you were here with me. There’s so much going on, so much I need to talk about.”
“Be a good girl and tell me all about it.”
“I can’t right now.” I sighed then changed back to a lighter tone. “And you know I’m not a good girl.”
“That is true. You are a naughty, naughty girl but I love you.”
I laughed at that but the sound was so hoarse I drank some wine to clear my dry throat. I did it so fast, though, that my head got dizzy and I felt my cheeks burning. I had to fan myself to cool my face down a little.
“You can count on that, hon. What have you been up to?”
“Not much. Jerry has been working his ass off at the hospital and I stay home, bored to death,” I heard a deep, exaggerated sigh on the other side of the phone line and smiled. “I should be writing my next best-seller novel but I spend the day stuffing my face with chocolate, instead.”
“Oh, that sounds sexy,” I chuckled at his usual drama queen tone.
“I never thought married life would be this boring for us. We had so much more fun when we were just dating.”
“Oh, so that’s why you called! You miss our crazy nights, huh? I miss them too, honey.”
It was his turn to laugh. All of a sudden, I remembered Mark and looked up to apologize to him for having been on the phone for so long but I found out he was no longer sitting across from me. It seemed he had taken our half-empty plates away, judging from the clattering sounds I could hear coming from the kitchen. I frowned but kept talking to Dave as I stood up and went to the kitchen to check on Mark.
“Since that’s the case I assume you are coming back home soon.”
“As soon as Jerry finishes his work here which means not for another month. Or ten - who knows? This research is taking forever! Then, we’ll both be home bugging you until you beg us to get on the next plane to Katmandu, or somewhere equally far. By the way, can you check on our place again to see if everything is fine there?”
“Don’t worry your pretty head about it. I’ll have everything shipshape and waiting for you whenever you are ready to come back. I can’t wait for you to be back in New York, though, Dave.”
“Tell me about it! Oh, look at the time! I gotta go, Carol. I need to start packing. We’ll go to my villa in the Amalfi Coast, as soon as Jerry arrives from the hospital, for the weekend. Talk to you soon, babe. Love you!”
“Love you, too, baby.”
I shook my head and smiled at Dave’s last remarks as I put the phone down thinking it was so typical of him - complaining about boredom and lack of fun while planning to spend the weekend in one of the most romantic, most beautiful places on Earth. I was still smiling when I looked up at Mark. He was leaning on the kitchen counter, arms crossed on his chest, a dark expression on his usually friendly face. I shrugged and frowned back at him.
“What?”
“What!? How can you even ask, Carol?”
His anger got me by surprise and I took some precious seconds to process that novelty, to adapt to such a new situation. When I didn’t answer and just looked at him with a blank expression, looking for something to say, Mark seemed to get angrier.
“For Christ’s sake, Carol! How can you be so insensitive? Or are you just cruel?” Mark was almost shouting. I had never seen him lose his temper like that. “You tease me at the office; invite me over saying you had planned a special night for us; then interrupt our dinner to talk to a man who has clearly been your boyfriend. Or who still is your boyfriend, for all I know! Then, you don’t expect me to get upset? Really? Do you have such a low opinion of me? Don’t you care about my feelings at all?”
“Look, Mark, I’m sorry if you got the wrong impression but I can assure you there is nothing going on between Dave and me.”
He was still fuming and cut me off before I could go on with my explanation.
“It’s hard to buy that, Carol. You got all worked up talking to the guy to the point you had to fan yourself,” he used his fingers to count and emphasize what I had done wrong, in his opinion. “You giggled like a school girl. You said you wished he were here. You said you had tons of things to talk about but not in front of me. You said you missed your crazy nights together. Damn, you even said you loved him! You told me you’d never said that to anybody.”
